9th Street Bridge

Rehabilitation of the 9th Street Bridge and Girder Repairs of 10th Street Bridge Over Southwest (Bridge Nos. 1107 (9th) and 1108 (10th))

Project Overview:

The 9th Street Bridge is a four span multi-girder steel structure with a reinforced concrete deck. The structure is supported on reinforced concrete piers and abutments. The bridge carries two lanes, same direction of 9th street traffic over I-395. The overall structure length is 288 feet. Originally the bridge was constructed in 1961. The Ramps M and C split out onto Southwest freeway from 9th Street Bridge. The existing condition of the Bridge is deplorable and needs extensive rehabilitation ranging from:

  1. Replacement and Reconstruction of full deck.
  2. Rehabilitation and repair of concrete cracks, spalls and disintegration on pedestals and supports.
  3. Cleaning of  existing Expansion Joint and Replacement of Bridge Approaches.
  4. Installation of 12” DIP under existing bridge and lights replacement above and below the bridge.
  5. Jacking girders as required to facilitate bearing replacement.
  6. Cleaning and painting of all steel members.
  7. Cleaning the scuppers and downspouts.
  8. Replacement of junction box covers and installation of barriers at each end of both sidewalks.
  9. Repair of damaged and missing railing spindles and concrete fascia.
  10. Repair of parapet concrete and re-establishment of guardrail connection.
  11. Replacement and repair of WASA roof pumping station.
  12. Renovation of existing Electrical control room.
  13. Replacement of the existing concrete walkway on 9th Street Bridge deck.
  14. Milling and overlay of 2-inch hot mix.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) proposed a 12-month rehabilitation period with Notice To Proceed issued to Martins Construction Corporation on September 22, 2008 and to finish on or before September 21, 2009.

Martins Construction Corporation has positioned all temporary required warning signs at dedicated locations per MOT plan and has received the CPM approval, and will begin work on Wednesday, November 5, 2008.
